SoftArc's FirstClass® is a leading multiplatform communication product, integrating full fledged electronic mail with distributable workgroup discussion areas, SQL database queries and powerful Internet connectivity.  FirstClass is used by millions of people around the world for internal mail and enterprise group communication.

This demonstration is a powerful introduction to FirstClass.  It is a special FirstClass system already configured with users, messages and discussion databases that you may connect to using SoftArc's FirstClass client software for various computer types.  You may use this demonstration version of FirstClass on a single computer, over your network or over a modem.  You may even explore the administration of FirstClass through this demo system.

  17. OVERVIEW

  19. FirstClass consists of two parts, a "server" and a "client".  The server is the heart of FirstClass.  It is designed to run on a computer in your office and accept network or remote logins from users.  The client is the part of FirstClass used to connect to a FirstClass server.  While SoftArc's FirstClass clients for different computer platforms are freely distributable and can likely be downloaded from the same area you found this demo server, the real FirstClass server is commercial software.

  21. FirstClass® Demo Server will run on any Macintosh with at least 1.5 MB RAM and 3 MB hard drive space.

  23. Any of SoftArc's FirstClass clients, available in a variety of langugages, may be downloaded from SoftArc's public FirstClass server SoftArc Online at 905-415-7070.

  26. INSTALLING THE FIRSTCLASS DEMO SERVER
  27.  
  28. The demo server will create 2.5 MB of data files in its installation process.  These are the users, messages, forms, documents and graphics you will see in the demo itself.  Be sure your hard drive will have at least 3 MB free.
  29.  
  30. 1) Choose the Macintosh you will designate as the server machine.  Drag the FirstClass® Demo Server folder to a hard drive on the designated computer.  (While the FirstClass server performs optimally on a dedicated computer, you may run both the demo server and client on the same machine but will experience degraded performance.)

  32. 2) Open the server folder and double-click on the Install FirstClass® Demo application.  You must confirm which hard drive you wish to install on.  FirstClass will take a moment to create its files in a folder called "FirstClass Demo Post Office" at the root level of your hard disk.  Be sure to leave this folder where it is created.  FirstClass will not run if it cannot find this folder at the root of your hard disk.

  34. 3) Ensure AppleTalk is turned on in the Macintosh Chooser.  Select Chooser from your Macintosh's Apple menu and make AppleTalk active if it is not already.

  36. 4) Launch the FirstClass® Demo Server by double-clicking on it.  The server will initialize itself and present you with a status screen.

  39. NETWORK CONNECTION TO THE DEMO SERVER WITH MACINTOSH CLIENT

FirstClass is a leading multiplatform network communications server.  It accommodates network logins over IPX, TCP/IP and AppleTalk simultaneously.  The FirstClass demonstration server has been licensed for all of these network protocols (each normally sold individually.)   We will connect from the Macintosh client to the Macintosh demo server using AppleTalk, the native networking protocol of the Macintosh.

Acquire and install the FirstClass® Client for Macintosh on the same machine as the demo server, or on any Macintosh networked to the server.  If you do not yet have the FirstClass client, you will likely find it where you found this demo server archive, or may download it from SoftArc Online, SoftArc's public FirstClass system at 905-415-7070.  FirstClass client is freely distributable software used to connect to FirstClass servers.  Copy the client software to as many computers in your organization as you like.

  45. If you will be running both server and client on the same machine, hide the server application or simply drag it to the side of your screen.

Double-click on the FirstClass Demo Server file in the Macintosh Client Files folder included with this archive.  The FirstClass client will initialize itself, pre-configured to connect to the demo server.  You will be presented with the FirstClass login form and a graphic screen showing the demo server logo.

  49. -If you are connecting to the demo server running on the same machine, simply enter a user ID as indicated on the login graphic and you will be connected.  No password is necessary.
  50. -If you are connecting to the server from a different machine, press the "Setup" button on the client and set the AppleTalk zone where the demo server is located.  If you do not have any zones in your network (or if you do not even understand the term "zone") you do not need to change the settings.  Simply log in by entering a user ID as prompted on the login graphic.

It is possible to connect to the demo server over a TCP/IP connection from the Macintosh client.  Ensure both server and client have been pre-configured with MacTCP, the Macintosh Control Panel which configures a Macintosh for a TCP/IP connection.  TCP/IP may then be selected as the connection method from the client setup area.  Enter the IP address of the server in the "server" field of the client setup window and log in as above.

  55. NETWORK CONNECTION TO THE DEMO SERVER WITH WINDOWS CLIENT

FirstClass is one of the few network communication applications that allows multi-platform, multi-protocol connections to the same server.  You may use the FirstClass Client for Windows, for example, to connect to the demo server by IPX at the same time a Macintosh user is connected over AppleTalk.  Users on different platforms may even hold real time typed discussions in FirstClass.

You may obtain the FirstClass® Client for Windows from online services or from SoftArc Online, SoftArc's public FirstClass server at 905-415-7070.  You may connect to the Macintosh demo server, or any other FirstClass server, with the Windows client.  Here's how to make the connection over IPX once you've obtained the Windows client:

  61. 1) Install the Windows client as directed.
  62. 2) Ensure your Windows computer is connected by Ethernet to the Macintosh running the FirstClass demo server.  If not, you may only connect to the demo server by modem (see below.)
  63. 2) Transfer the FCDEMO.FCS and FCDEMO.DLL files from the Windows Client Files folder distributed with this demo to the Windows Client's SETTINGS sub-directory.  These give the FirstClass Windows client the same background graphics and custom resources as the Macintosh client when connecting to the demo server.
  64. 3) Run the FirstClass client and, when prompted, select the FCDEMO.FCS file to connect to the FirstClass Demo Server.
  65. 4) Enter a user ID as indicated on the login graphic and press the Login button.

It is possible to connect to the demo server over a TCP/IP connection from the Windows client.  Ensure the server has been pre-configured with MacTCP, the Macintosh Control Panel which configures a Macintosh for a TCP/IP connection.  Ensure the Windows machine has a "Windows Sockets" TCP/IP stack configured (such as Chameleon TCP/IP for Windows from NetManage, Inc., TCP/Connect II for Windows from Intercon Systems Corp. or Trumpet Winsock by Peter R. Tattammay).   TCP/IP may then be selected as the connection method from the client setup area.  Enter the IP address of the server in the "server" field of the client setup window and log in as above.

  70. CONNECTING TO THE DEMO SERVER BY MODEM
  71.  
  72. FirstClass clients and servers may connect by wide-area network or asynchronous modem connections.  When connecting by modem, FirstClass offers users the same feature set and multitasking graphical interface as with network connections.

The FirstClass demo server is pre-configured to expect a modem connected to the modem port of its host Macintosh.  If no modem is present, the server will still initialize but will report modem reset errors in e-mail to the administrator.  You may ignore these if you do not intend to evaluate modem access on the demo server.

The demo server only recognizes connected modems at 2400 BPS, regardless of the actual speed of the modem.  While you may use fast modems with the real version of FirstClass, this demo is limited to 2400 BPS to simplify modem configuration.  (To try a high speed modem connection with FirstClass, connect to SoftArc Online, SoftArc's public FirstClass system, at 905-415-7070.  More than a dozen high-speed 28.8 modems are assigned to incoming calls.)

  78. To connect to the demo server by modem, you of course require two modems and two computers.  Follow these steps:
  79.  
  80. 1) Ensure a modem has been plugged into the FirstClass demo server and connected to a valid telephone line.
  81. 2) On a different computer, install another modem connected to a valid telephone line and launch the FirstClass client.  Select the FirstClass Demo Server settings file (FCDEMO.FCS on Windows.)
  82. 3) Press the "Setup" button, select a connection by modem, and enter the phone number of the modem you configured on your demo server.
  83. 4) Press the "Setup" button beside your modem selection to set up the specifics of your modem connection.  Select a modem from the pop-up list that matches the modem on your client machine.
  84. 5) Save your changes, enter a user ID and press the Login button.  The client will dial the server by modem and negotiate a 2400 BPS connection.  You'll find FirstClass is still quite usable even over such a slow connection!

  87. LIMITS OF THE FIRSTCLASS DEMO SERVER
  88.  
  89. The FirstClass Demo Server has been intentionally crippled.  The following are limitations of the demo server:
  90.  
  91. -The demo server is limited to a maximum of two simultaneous network connections and one 2400 BPS modem connection.  The real FirstClass server accommodates up to 100 simultaneous users and any speed of modems.
  92. -The demo server is only licensed for 10 user accounts.  Real FirstClass servers may accommodate upwards of 10,000 user accounts.
  93. -All protocol and platform license options have been enabled on the FirstClass demo server (allowing you to connect by IPX, for instance, from a Windows machine to a FirstClass server running on a Macintosh.)  These options are not enabled on standard FirstClass servers and must be purchased separately.
  94. -Gateways have been disabled on the demo server.  You may not connect to add-on FirstClass products or real FirstClass servers.  FirstClass may normally connect to a variety of optional gateways and can connect to other FirstClass servers to build large, distributed mail and conferencing systems.
  95. -Routine purges of deleted mail and files, or "trash collections", are disabled in the demo server.  FirstClass normally erases expired or deleted items, keeping post offices sized reasonably without system administrator intervention.
  96. -The demo server is designed to stop running once an hour.  You will need to restart it and log back in if the server quits unexpectedly.

  99. POTENTIAL SERVER MESSAGES
  100.  
  101. The FirstClass demo server may occasionally report codes if it encounters unusual network or modem situations.  These codes appear on the main display of the FirstClass demo server application.  The following will help diagnose codes:
  102.  
  103. -2                You do not have a compatible version of AppleTalk to support enhanced IPX frame types.  AppleTalk 58.0 or greater is required to use IPX with 802.2 or Ethernet_II frame type.  AppleTalk 58.0.4 or greater is required to use IPX with 802.2, 802.3, Ethernet_SNAP or Ethernet_II.
  104. -21            MacTCP may not be installed.  If you intend to connect to the demo server over TCP/IP, you must install MacTCP in your Control Panels and configure it for your Macintosh.  Restart your computer.
  105. -23            AppleTalk not activated in the Chooser.  Activate AppleTalk and restart your server Macintosh.
  106. -98            AppleTalk not activated in the Chooser.  Activate AppleTalk and restart your server Macintosh.
  107. 1013        FirstClass Demo Server already has someone logged into that account.  Try another User ID.
  108. 1034        Modem not responding.  FirstClass does not have a Hayes compatible modem on the modem port of the Macintosh.  (If you do not have a modem connected, disregard this error.)
  109. 1074        IPX not loaded.  FirstClass believes IPX has not been loaded correctly at the DOS level.  Documents for setting up FirstClass Windows connections over less-common IPX environments are available on SoftArc Online.
